Head Coach April Fleming is in her 19th year as the head volleyball coach at Liberty High School. Born and raised in the small town of Alma, MO, she graduated from Santa Fe High School in 1999 and continued her volleyball career at Northwest Missouri State University. While there, she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, Minor in Biology, and Master's Degree in Administration. She moved to Liberty in 2004 and has been coaching at the high school level ever since.
While coaching for the Jays, Coach Fleming’s teams have been the first to accomplish many things in the school’s history that include:
Conference Titles: 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018
District Titles: 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019
State: 4th place finish (2014) and 3rd place finish (2019)
Coach Fleming was named “Coach of the Year” in 2013 and 2014 by the Greater Kansas City Volleyball Coaches Associate and "Coach of the Year" in 2014 by the Greater Kansas City Volleyball Officials Association. In 2019 she hit the 300 career win mark.
Coach Fleming believes that the key to success is fostering a positive learning environment and getting young athletes to love the game at an early age. From 2009-2019 Coach Fleming dedicated a lot of her time to developing future Blue Jays in the game of volleyball by creating and directing the Liberty Juniors Volleyball Program. This program focused on teaching youth the proper fundamentals starting at the age of nine. She believes that through sports, athletes are able to explore and develop lifelong skills such as the importance of teamwork, discipline, and leadership. She ranks attitude and hard work as the most important assets of a volleyball player, and fosters an environment that holds high expectations. Coach Fleming resides in Liberty, MO with her husband, Chad, and sons, Braylon and Jace.
Coach Leone was born and raised in Independence, Missouri, and graduated from Truman High School in 1999. During his high school years he played basketball and club volleyball for the URGE volleyball club. After graduation he went on to attend Graceland University where he played volleyball for four years as a setter and defensive specialist. He graduated in 2003 with a degree in Physical Education and later earned a Master’s degree in education from Baker University. He has been coaching at LHS for the past 11 seasons. He spent his first two seasons as the JV coach before becoming the assistant varsity coach. Outside of coaching for LHS he has been apart of coaching at the club level for Extreme Mavs Volleyball Club and currently coaches for the Liberty Juniors Explosion. He has also helped coach with the Liberty Juniors Volleyball Program where the first team he coached graduated from LHS in 2014. Coach Leone has spent the past four years as the PE teacher at Kellybrook Elementary.
Originally from LeMars, IA, Katie played basketball, volleyball and softball in high school, before continuing to play volleyball at Benedictine College. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. Katie began her teaching and coaching career in Excelsior Springs before coming to Liberty. Later, Katie graduated from Northwest Missouri State University with a Master’s Degree in Reading. Coach Goulding has been a part of the Blue Jay staff since 2007, first as an 8th grade coach before moving to the JV position in 2010. She currently teaches 6th English Language Arts at Liberty Middle School. Katie resides in the Liberty area with her husband, Lance.
